Some of you may know that I had never read the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. Well, back in February I decided it was high time that I read it. And now I’m irreversibly attached to the characters, Hogwarts, and the books themselves. Whoops. Anyway, I’ve read the Harry Potter books and no longer feel like a vaguely aware Muggle. Now that I know what I’ve been missing out on I have gotten myself sorted on Pottermore (actually, I did that before I read the books) and I’ve been thinking about the Hogwarts houses. Specifically, what houses some of my favorite characters would be in if they went to Hogwarts. For those of you who don’t know, there are four Hogwarts houses: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw. Whose values are bravery, ambition, loyalty, and wisdom respectively. Based off of those values and other determining factors noted in the books I will attempt to play the role of the Sorting Hat and put my favorite characters from books, TV, and movies into one of the four houses. I think it should be a lot of fun, and obviously my opinion is just one of many so I’d be pleased to hear what you think in the comments below! Artemis Fowl from Artemis Fowl - While he does value wisdom and knowledge very highly and would likely think himself to be a Ravenclaw, I think Artemis is more suited to Slytherin. He’s quite ambitious, stopping at nothing - not even risking the lives of everyone he loves - to get what he wants. And what he wants is power… more specifically, gold (which, according to him, is power). Image source: http://artemisfowl.wikia.com/wiki/File:Artemis01.JPG Captain Holly Short from Artemis Fowl - This one is a tough call between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff (and even Slytherin sometimes), honestly. Holly is one of the bravest characters in the whole series, but she is also one of the most loyal. I think I have to go with Hufflepuff though. Besides being loyal, she is also dedicated to her work, kind, hardworking, and fair. Image source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holly_Short Lihn Cinder from The Lunar Chronicles - Personally, I can’t think of putting her in any house besides Gryffindor. Okay, maybe Hufflepuff, but mostly Gryffindor. While she might not go seeking adventures, she handles them marvelously. She’s also noble when it comes down to it and a little bit short tempered. Image source: http://lunarchronicles.wikia.com/wiki/Linh_Cinder Jacin Clay from The Lunar Chronicles - This man is a Hufflepuff, m’kay? No, don’t give me those Gryffindor arguments, you won’t be changing my mind on this (though you can try if you want). He is ridiculously loyal to Winter (if you’ve read Winter you know what I’m talking about), his parents, and even his country. Even if he’s not exactly patient or kind, he is hardworking and dedicated to, not only his princess, but a job he doesn’t even want. Plus, he’s an ametur florist. Man is a Hufflepuff. Image source: http://lunarchronicles.wikia.com/wiki/Jacin_Clay James Moriarty from Sherlock - I know a lot of people put Jim in Slytherin when sorting the Sherlock characters, and I kind of see their point, but I also think we need to stop having Slytherin be the default villain house. Yes, he’s resourceful and cunning, but I don’t really think he’s ambitious. He seems to think that doing whatever he wants is childsplay and doesn’t need much thought, whereas ambition would be more striving to do something even if it seems impossible at times. So, that is why I’m putting him in Ravenclaw. We already know he’s smart, but he’s also always looking for ways to increase that knowledge and test it. And you can’t deny that he’s creative and witty. Image source: http://bakerstreet.wikia.com/wiki/Jim_Moriarty Mycroft Holmes from Sherlock - Now this guy, despite his love for cakes and umbrellas, is a Slytherin. The man basically runs the British government, if that isn’t ambitious I don’t know what is. He’s cunning, sneaky, and resourceful. Besides, I can just picture him at Hogwarts wearing green and silver and making fun of his Ravenclaw brother (of course, he wouldn’t let any other Slytherins make fun of Sherlock). Image source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p04ln8mn/p04lnbjj Howl from Howl’s Moving Castle - Apart from being a drama king, Howl is also a Ravenclaw. Obviously I wasn’t going to put him in Gryffindor, coward that he is, and he’s not particularly ambitious. He’s not loyal enough to be a Hufflepuff so that leaves Ravenclaw. Which kind of works because he likes to know things… and show off how much he knows. He also seems to be fairly creative. So Ravenclaw it is. Image source: http://www.anime-planet.com/characters/howl Joker from DC Comics - Much like Moriarty, Joker is very creative when it comes to crime. Despite the insanity of his personality, he’s very witty and clever when it comes to finding ways to outwit Batman. Plus, due to Luna Lovegood’s eccentric behavior, a lot of people seem to find Ravenclaw synonymous with quirky. On a side note, he could also be a Gryffindor. You have to admit that he’s brave (though not noble in the least) and, come on, we all know that Gryffindor’s are just a little bit crazy too. Image source: http://comicbook.com/2015/02/15/5-essential-joker-first-appearance-origin-stories/ Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes - Slytherin. Have you read this comic strip? Slytherin. He’s cunning, sneaky, ambitious, resourceful, and imaginative. I could easily see him trying to conquer the world someday. Or just becoming a huge business tycoon. Either way, this boy is going places. Image source: http://www.calvinandhobbes.com/about-calvin-and-hobbes/ Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch from Marvel - I wasn’t going to do any Marvel characters, just because I feel like most of them are pretty obvious about which house they’d belong in, but I wasn’t sure about Wanda so I thought I’d do her (and she’s one of my favorite characters). I’m gonna say Gryffindor. A little Hufflepuff, sure, but Wanda is incredibly courageous. She fights even when she’s terrified, which is what I think bravery is all about, and she is willing to risk her own safety to protect others. This is based off what I know of her from the movies, as I haven’t read any comics with her in them. Image source: https://comicvine.gamespot.com/scarlet-witch/4005-1466/ Bob the Tomato from Veggie Tales - My favorite tomato of all time seems like a Hufflepuff to me. He’s loyal to the show, his friends, and his responsibilities. He’s amazingly patient with Larry and he just seems like the kind of fruit anyone would want as their pal. Image source: http://veggietalesitsforthekids.wikia.com/wiki/Bob_the_Tomato Okay, I think I need to be done. There are a ton of other characters who I’d love to talk about from various stories, but I feel like this post is already pretty long. So, I’ll leave you with these. I had so much fun with this post and reading Harry Potter. I can’t wait to discuss the series in posts to come. Oh, if you were curious, I’m a Ravenclaw and quite proud of it. What house were you sorted into/think you belong in? Be sure to let me know! Thanks! Banner image source: https://www.theodysseyonline.com/hogwarts-house
